A Rare Ottoman Tombak Naval Lantern
Made For Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha (D. 1596),

Resting on a turned and ebonised wooden stand, applied with gilt seashell mounts in relief, the lantern of exceptional craftsmanship, the tombak structure formed as a gimbal composed of three rotating concentric rings enclosing a central oil receptacle, each ring joined by delicate rods allowing movement in multiple planes; the gilt-copper surfaces finely engraved with a rich repertoire of Ottoman ornament—tulip heads, palmettes, roundels, and interlacing arabesques—exemplifying the refined courtly aesthetic of the late sixteenth century
